    Advocacy & Policy Research Assistant 

    35 hours per week | 12 weeks: Monday, June 10 to Friday, August 31, 2024 

     

    The Advocacy & Policy Research Assistant is responsible to assist in the development of policy and research relating to advocacy work in the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce including planning and analyzing research. The research may be used to develop written lobbying documents, including government submissions and other external publications.  

    To excel in this role, you will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, have excellent people skills, strong writing skills, and be comfortable speaking to the business community. We are a small (but mighty) office team of two, so working well with a team is a definite asset. 


    Duties and Responsibilities 

    • - Review current Chamber policy resolutions including those with the Manitoba and Canadian Chambers of Commerce 

    • - Update Chamber’s website with active and historical policies; indicating their status and next steps; if applicable 

    • - Add public form to website for businesses to submit concerns/issues for the Chamber’s Advocacy Committee to consider taking action 

    • - Assist in the creation of a Policy Communications Plan; working with the Advocacy Committee and the Marketing & Office Coordinator 

    • - Develop a communications piece to prospective and current business members that outlines the Chamber’s value proposition of including the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce as its voice of business 

    • - Nurture current Chamber membership and partnership relationships, and build new relationships with prospective Chamber member businesses and members of our community through phone, video and/or in-person visits 

    • - Assist at the 2024 Member Drive Golf Event: set-up, registration desk, hole sponsor liaison, other duties as needed 

    • - Participate and support networking and events delivered to Chamber members and the community 

    • - Represent the Chamber in a professional manner 

    • - Perform other job duties as assigned 

     

    Qualifications and Eligibility 

    • - Previous research experience is an asset 

    • - Strong interpersonal skills that effectively cultivate relationships with Chamber members, volunteers, vendors, and community stakeholders 

    • - Strong written communication skills, including proofreading and editing 

    • - Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Excel, Word; membership databases and design programs are a bonus 

    • - Having a Class 5 drivers license and a vehicle are a bonus 

     

     

    Note: This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs – applicants must: 

    1. - is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; 

    1. - is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and 

    1. - is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations. 

    *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. 

     

    Hours of Work 

    General office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday; except on days of events which may require an earlier start or a longer day.
